Singapore observes Earth Hour
SINGAPORE : Thousands of people across Singapore observed Earth Hour on Saturday, as individuals at home and organisations switched off their lights for an hour.
Many parts of Singapore were plunged into darkness, as the lights went off at 8.30pm Singapore time, and remained switched off until 9.30pm.
Earth Hour is a global initiative by the World Wide Fund for Nature to raise awareness of climate change. It is the second year that Earth Hour is being observed in Singapore.
Various hotels across the Marina Bay area switched off their lights at 8.30pm sharp.
Merlion/Singapore Flyer Supports Earth Hour
More Singapore icons, landmarks and commercial buildings will be taking part in Earth Hour.
At 8.30pm on March 28, the Merlion, Singapore Flyer, Fullerton Hotel and the Esplanade will stand in darkness for one hour in support of the fight against climate change.
Shopping malls like Raffles City, Plaza Singapura, Bugis Junction and Junction 8 have also committed to switching off their facade lights during Earth Hour.
Office buildings like Capital Tower, One George Street and Robinson Point, as well as some service apartments will also support the green cause.
In Singapore, organisers have a target of one million participants.
So far, only about 2,000 people and 350 companies have registered on the website to do their part for the environment.
But organisers believe there will be thousands out there taking part in Earth Hour in their own way and tracking numbers can only be done after the event is over.

Nadya Hutagalung as Earth Hour Celebrity Ambassador
WWF’s EARTH HOUR GAINS STAR POWER IN SINGAPORE NADYA HUTAGALUNG SIGNS AS CLIMATE CHANGE CAMPAIGN’S FIRST CELEBRITY AMBASSADOR
Singapore –13th March 2009 – International TV presenter and model, Nadya Hutagalung, has this week joined the fight against climate change by signing up as an official ambassador for WWF’s Earth Hour in Singapore.
Nadya is somewhat of an eco warrior in her own life and so was very pleased to be able to lend her star power to Earth Hour to help raise the profile of the campaign.
Her ambassadorial responsibilities will include a range of activities but start this week with her recording a special video message for broadcast on MSN video and Facebook.
Earth Hour organisers confident
Earth Hour organisers confident of success for inaugural event in Singapore
SINGAPORE: It is just a few weeks before Earth Hour on March 28, when households and businesses are encouraged to switch off their electricity usage for one hour.
It is the first time Singapore is taking part in the initiative to raise awareness on climate issues. While the number of people registered for the event seems dismal in Singapore, the organisers are not worried.
Man with a message
WILD fires, snow in unlikely regions and even Singapore’s own spate of bush fires have helped to turn Singapore’s corporate conscience a little bit greener.
Around this time last year, Craig Law Smith (picture) was knocking on doors trying to interest decision-makers into taking part in Singapore’s inaugural Earth Hour event.
This year, Craig, one of the prime movers of the WWF campaign here, is chuffed that — at last count — about 250 organisations have already signed on to the event on March 28.
“Last year’s effort was a very grass roots effort with myself and one other person from the World Wildlife Foundation literally knocking on doors and spreading awareness of Earth Hour,” says the 41-year-old.
